2000 ~ Year of the Dragon

2k is when things really started getting fun. Crain Communications, a mid-size business magazine publisher, recruited me nearly fresh out of college to launch and grow their in-house web department. For the last few years they had been spending approx. $10 million a year on outsourced web services for their 30+ publications. The idea was to bring the web in-house and save millions.

Well it worked. Over the course of a year, the team manager and I grew the team to 15 employees and cut outsourced web spending by $8 million. We also increased web advertising revenue from $0 to $1.25 million through the installation of an ad serving system. My role in that system was installation and staff training.

Some of the resulting sites I built were Autoweek, Automotive News, Crain's Detroit Business, Crain's New York, and Ad Age.

One of the more forward thinking sites was Michigan CrainTech. The Crain's Detroit News staff wanted to capitalize on the auto industry's growing interest in technology, so this e-zine was created.

My role in this project was structural engineering and site programming. Artwork came from our on-staff designers and the tech writers from Crain's Detroit took over management after launch.

Unfortunately in late 2000 Crain lost a ton of money on dot-bomb investing. Due to this the execs panicked and shut down their web department (laying me off in the process), choosing to outsource all the sites again. Later I found out this actually cost them MORE than they were paying before I got there. Live and learn in business I guess.
