Database Management A site doesn't hold much value if it isn't built on top of a quality database. A database-driven site allows your staff to update the website without requiring vast technical knowledge. It also allows on-demand manipulation of content based on the visitor's preferences or market segment. An unbelievable percentage of companies still maintain their pages by hand, typically using programs like Dreamweaver or FrontPage. The labor cost it takes to make a simple change, such as adding a navigational button, can strip away any profit margin their site may generate. The magic of a database-driven site is the amount of control it allows you to have. Using a simple administrative interface, you can add and edit pages at will - in just a few minutes. For most sites, databases are fast to build and easy to add. It took me a little under 10 minutes to set up the database for this site, which stores the content of the History and Library pages (and the page you're reading). |
